The idea of an innate sense of God (Latin sensus divinitatis) plays an important role in the Bible and is later expounded in Calvin’s epistemology. Every human being, according to Calvin, is born with a knowledge that God exists and that we are accountable to him. Calvin learned the concept of innate knowledge of God from Paul, especially from the

The populace of Saudi Arabia is at least 95 per cent Muslim and therefore at least 95 per cent theistic, while the populace of Thailand is 95 per cent Buddhist and therefore at most 5 per cent theistic.

My dad would often read the Bible to me, and my mom would sing worship songs. 3 §2 Current Models of the Sensus Divinitatis Plantinga uses the sensus divinitatis to model non-inferentially warranted theistic belief—warrant being that which, in sufficient quantity, makes the difference between knowledge and mere true belief.8 Our discussion is focused on the different but related positive epistemic status epistemic justification. The sensus divinitatis is not an organ of the knowledge of God which transcends the corruption of human nature; it is an unavoidable impression left on man by the prevailing power of God. It is especially Calvin who translated the language of Scripture accurately on this point. This paper outlines a pedagogical strategy for organizing and evaluating Calvin’s treatment of the sensus divinitatis, chiefly by putting it in tension with John Locke’s polemic against sensus divinitatis emerges from our standard rational faculties. The operations of the sensus divinitatis are carried out, on a fundamental level, through reason, perception, and other faculties.

This we take to be beyond controversy. And that brings me to the 16th century Reformer John Calvin and his notion of the sensus divinitatis or "sense of the divine." Calvin was not out to prove God, but to state that inherent in human existence is a basic, vague, and powerful natural knowledge of God. “Sensus Divinitatis” is Latin for “sense of the divine”—a sort of sixth sense human beings may have for a presence beyond both magic and modern management, metrics, and manipulation. Technically, philosophically speaking its more of a disposition or capacity for directed wonder, awe, and gratitude. There have been sharply divergent views on Calvin's view of natural theology. Some think that Calvin sees no 'point of contact' between believer and unbeliever, others that he is a fully fledged natural theologian. This Chapter reassesses the evidence not only from the Institutes but also from Calvin's Commentaries.

Sensus divinitatis ("sense of divinity"), also referred to as sensus deitatis ("sense of deity") or semen religionis ("seed of religion"), is a term first used by French Protestant reformer John Calvin to describe a hypothetical human sense. Answer: The sensus divinitatis is the natural capacity of human beings to perceive God. This concept is primarily associated with the writings of John Calvin, but it’s also seen in the work of modern philosophers such as Alvin Plantinga.

Alvin Plantinga famously appeals to the existence of a sensus divinitatis, a “ sense of the divine”, as the cognitive faculty by which one can form justified and

Let us assume that humans have a sensus divinitatis (which, being ours, we shall call ‘the’ sensus divinitatis), and that some gain non-inferential justification for theism thereby.3 In the most prominent model of the sensus divinitatis—Alvin Plantinga’s Aquinas/Calvin model (Plantinga (2000), 168-186)—the sensus divinitatis On Sensus Divinitatis in Plantinga, a footnote to Dutch Spinozism (Van Eeden & Dooyeweerd) Dooyeweerd rightly rejects any dictation to philosophy on the part of theology; and where he thinks that traditional Reformed thinking deviates from the truth, he does not shrink from suggesting revisions. Alvin Plantinga theorizes the existence of a sensus divinitatis – a special cognitive faulty or mechanism dedicated to the production and non-inferential justification of theistic belief. Following Chris Tucker, we offer an evidentialist-friendly model of the sensus divinitatis whereon it produces theistic seemings that non-inferentially justify theistic belief. However, in the same paper, he also offers a powerful argument against the existence of a sensus divinitatis (i.e., a natural capacity to form properly basic belief in God in a wide variety of circumstances or "triggering-conditions", such as (e.g.) looking at the starry heavens, reading the Bible, etc.) postulated by reformed epistemologists of the likes of Alvin Plantinga and others. Nevertheless, Alvin Plantinga cites him along with John Calvin among the two main predecessors of his famous idea of sensus divinitatis.
